Lauren’s Story

  • by

NovoGen are very proud and honoured to be able to provide our NovoTHOR Light Therapy Pod sessions to a local Mackay resident in need.

Lauren is a 20-year-old young woman with severe physical and intellectual disabilities. She had a traumatic three-day birth and presented with a nuchal cord, which is when the umbilical cord is wrapped around the baby’s neck. This can occur during pregnancy, labour, or birth. When a nuchal cord is present in a pregnancy, this is monitored closely by doctors.

The main cause for concern is if the umbilical cord becomes compressed against itself or the baby’s neck, which reduces the flow of oxygenated blood through the umbilical cord. This can be very dangerous to the baby.

Lauren is physically unable to support her body weight and is totally wheelchair occupied.  She is unable to self-propel her wheelchair and relies on her Disability Support Worker (DSW) team to manoeuvre her around.  Her fine and gross motor skills are uncoordinated, and she is non-verbal.  Lauren has very limited understanding/comprehension of the simplest instructions and relies on her DSW team to do almost everything for her. Lauren also has severe scoliosis, which has been corrected with the implant of a surgical steel rod along her spine. This gives her great discomfort at times, evidenced by her being extremely unhappy and closed off.

Lauren’s mum has watched her daughter struggle for the last 20 years, in and out of doctor’s offices without anything concrete to help. Medical Specialists in diagnosing disabilities have not been able to identify what Lauren’s disability is. Lauren’s mother Melissa is not sure if the disability is due to brain oxygen deprivation or genetics. With no official diagnosis and traditional medicine not helping, Lauren’s mum has since explored holistic medicine styles.

After discovering Quantum Reflex Integration (QRI) which is a guide style, red light therapy, they finally saw some improvements in Lauren’s condition, including her ability to stand and walk slowly. The home-administered red light therapy device cost her family $5,000, and would only treat small areas at a time. Sadly, these treatments had to cease as they were causing other issues for Lauren, such as headaches and discomfort. Everyone watched Lauren’s condition backflip once stopping, and their glimmer of hope seemed to evaporate right in front of their eyes. Without the option to go back to these treatments, Lauren looked to NovoGen

NovoTHOR Red Light Therapy Pod now available in Mackay

NovoGen suggested the whole-body light therapy pod treatments for Lauren’s condition. One of the joys of this treatment is it is extremely calming and relaxing to lie in the warm pod and receive the treatments. Unlike the device used previously, the NovoTHOR Light Therapy Pod will treat the whole-body in 15 minutes.

There are many studies to suggest Low-Level Laser (light) Therapy (LLLT) may be a therapeutic option to improve cognitive recovery and limit inflammation after a traumatic brain injury. We plan to start Lauren’s treatments slowly, increasing her time in the pod each session slowly. We are extremely excited to see Lauren’s results, and embark on this journey with her to a better quality of life.

Follow us on our socials to keep up to date with Lauren’s progress. We will be sharing more insights into just what she has gone through to get here today, and how her treatments are tracking every step of the way.
