Everything you need to know about red light therapy

  • by

You may have heard of red light therapy, or it might be a completely new concept to you. It is a treatment that NovoGen is proud to offer, thanks to the NovoTHOR machine, the only one of its kind in Mackay.

But what exactly is red light therapy, how does it work, what are the benefits, and is it safe to use?

What is red light therapy?

Red light therapy is a treatment that aims to help with injuries, relax muscles and joints and increase blood circulation.

Red light therapy has numerous other names, including RLT, photobiomodulation, low-level light therapy, and low-power laser therapy, to name a few.

How does red light therapy work?

Red light therapy works on a cellular level. It produces a biochemical effect in the cells which strengthens the mitochondria – where the cell’s energy is created. This allows the cells to be able to function more efficiently and can repair damage and rejuvenate themselves.

What are the benefits of red light therapy?

There are numerous benefits to undertaking red light therapy. These include:

– Improving skin health

– Reducing fine lines and wrinkle severity

– Improving the appearance of acne

– Speeding up the process of wound healing

– Reduce pain for those with certain disorders

– Anti-inflammatory benefits

– Improve sleep conditions

– Reduce feelings of fatigue

Red light therapy delivers optimal wavelengths, power densities and dosage which works to soothe, relax and revitalise.

Is it safe?

Red light therapy is considered a safe procedure that is painless. Unlike other treatments such as laser or intense pulsed light (IPL), red light therapy does not cause any damage to the skin. In the case of laser treatments and IPL, damage is caused to the outer layer of the skin, which causes the skin cells to repair themselves. Red light therapy works at a cellular level, with the light penetrating around 5 millimetres below the skin’s surface.

While there are no side effects of red light therapy, you need to ensure you are booking your appointment with an experienced practitioner. If you do not have any experience and plan on using any at-home products, you may notice side effects such as burns or damage to the skin.

We recommend if you are considering undergoing red light therapy, ensure you always know the credentials and history of the clinic you visit.
